Myth: d'Aulnoy's works were not attributed to her in the eighteenth century. Part 1: Histoire d'Hypolite (1690)

I was recently at a conference and was told that Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy's works (novels and fairy tales) were either little published or not attributed to her in the eighteenth century. I had published "Marie-Catherine d’Aulnoy : ses contes et leur prolifique héritage en Europe" (2023), in which I traced 37 editions/reissues  in French of Histoire d'Hypolite, comte de Duglas, her bestselling novel, in the eighteenth century. I revisited this list to document specifically how many of these editions (among those I could consult) attributed the novel to d'Aulnoy. Far from being little published and unattributed, my preliminary findings thus far have 79% of the editions include d'Aulnoy's name on the title page, with 21% unattributed. A far cry from the claim that her works were not attributed to her. In a second post I will explore attributions regarding her fairy tales.
